A new animated series headed to Netflix is sure to spark some controversy and conversation. Q-Force, an adult-aimed animated series, is launching in September, and it is entirely LGBTQ-focused.
The series follows the lead character Steve Maryweather, shunned by his government job after coming out as a gay man. After being sent off into obscurity, the spy puts together a team of LGBTQ members called Q-Force. Netflix has launched a trailer for the upcoming comedy, including with it the voice cast announcement.
Sean Hayes (Will and Grace) will lead the cast, with Gary Cole (Office Space), David Harbour (Black Widow, Stranger Things), Patti Harrison (Raya and the Last Dragon), Laurie Metcalf (Roseanna), Matt Rogers (Game Show), Wanda Sykes (Over the Hedge), and Gabe Liedman (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) portraying the remaining team members.
Although the series doesn't hit the streaming service until September 2nd, you can check out the full trailer and synopsis for yourself below. We also included our chat with Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu, in which we discuss her gender identity animated short, Kapaemahu.
Never hide who you are. Unless you’re undercover.
"Steve Maryweather, AKA Agent Mary, was once the Golden Boy of the American Intelligence Agency (AIA), until he came out as gay. Unable to fire him, the Agency sent him off to West Hollywood, to disappear into obscurity. Instead, he assembled a misfit squad of LGBTQ+ geniuses.
Joining forces with the expert mechanic Deb, master of drag and disguise Twink, and hacker Stat, together they’re Q-Force. But, after a decade of waiting for their first official mission from The AIA, Mary becomes hell-bent on proving himself to the Agency that turned its back on him, and decides to go rogue with Q-Force.
After finding their own case, and solving it on their own terms, they get the reluctant approval of The AIA, and are officially upgraded to Active Secret Agents in the field. But, that approval comes with one major caveat-- they must put up with a new member of the squad: straight-guy Agent Buck."
Q-FORCE, the first queer spy division, is coming to Netflix on September 2.
