We've known for a while now that Netflix and Sony were planning to develop a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters. The record-breaking animated fantasy became the most popular Netflix film of all time while earning two Oscar nominations and dominating the global music charts. A sequel was inevitable.

But it was never technically official until today. Netflix has now formally announced that KPop Demon Hunters 2 is in development. Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans will return to write and direct the highly anticipated sequel.

“I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters,” Kang said via Tudum. “There’s so much more to this world we have built, and I’m excited to show you. This is only the beginning.”

“These characters are like family to us, their world has become our second home," added Appelhans. "We’re excited to write their next chapter, challenge them, and watch them evolve — and continue pushing the boundaries of how music, animation, and story can come together."

Produced in partnership with Sony Pictures Animation, KPop Demon Hunters was an unexpected hit for Netflix, reaching more than 500 million views on the streaming platform since its debut in June 2025. The film follows a group of K-pop superstars called HUNTR/X who secretly live double lives as demon hunters, protecting their fans from an ever-present supernatural threat. Their greatest challenge comes from the irresistibly charming rival boy band Saja Boys, who are actually demons in disguise.

The film’s success was fueled in part by its catchy soundtrack, which broke several records and achieved a number of historic firsts. HUNTR/X became the first K-pop girl group to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, while the hit song “Golden” made history as the first K-pop track to win a Grammy Award. KPop Demon Hunters is also nominated for two Oscars: Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song (“Golden”).

“With KPop Demon Hunters, Maggie and Chris didn’t just reach audiences, they ignited a global fandom that crossed languages, generations, and genres,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria. “We’re incredibly proud to deepen our partnership with them and, together with our partners at Sony Pictures Animation, build this universe in ways that will surprise and delight fans all over the world.”

“Maggie and Chris were brave enough to take a bold creative swing by telling a story that was both deeply personal and broke cultural barriers," commented Netflix Film Chariman Dan Lin. At Netflix, our goal is to make someone’s favorite movie, and they did that by making the most popular Netflix movie of all time! There’s so much more story to tell, and we can’t wait to bring more HUNTR/X to fans everywhere.”

It's obviously way too early for specific deails, but it's expected that the sequel will conintue to follow HUNTR/X as they secretly protect the world from demons. Kang and Appelhans have talked about expanding the universe and characters even further, while producer Michelle Wong said she'd love for the sequel to the backstories of Mira and Zoey.
