The next chapter of Avatar: The Last Airbender is just months away. Netflix announced today that Season 2 of Avatar: The Last Airbender, its live-action re-imagining of the beloved animated series, will premiere on June 25, 2026.
Anticipation has been building towards the release of Season 2, and for good reason. Season 2 will see Aang and his friends venture further into the Earth Kingdom on a mission to convince the Earth King to aid in their battle against the fearsome Fire Lord Ozai. The group heads to the impenetrable city of Ba Sing Se, home of the Earth King and also where we meet Toph, the fan-favorite master of earthbending.
In addition to announcing the release date, Netflix has shared a new behind-the-scenes video where the cast and crew explore the practical sets of Ba Sing Se, which was built outdoors by a team led by production designer Michael Wylie.
“Once we got the back lot and we realized we could build Ba Sing Se," executive producer and writer Christine Boylan told Tudum. "I probably cried that day. It was so exciting. All of those buildings were real. We would go in there with our monitors. We would go in there and write.”
After a bittersweet victory saving the Northern Water Tribe from the invading Fire Nation, Avatar Aang (Gordon Cormier), Katara (Kiawentiio) and Sokka (Ian Ousley) regroup and set off on a mission to convince the elusive Earth King to aid in their battle against fearsome Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim).
Their journey to the impenetrable city of Ba Sing Se, home of the Earth King, is treacherous but also fruitful – Aang discovers Toph (Miyako), an audacious young master of earthbending, and convinces her to help him add earthbending to his powers of airbending and waterbending.
According to executive producer Jabbar Raisani, Season 2 will see a major growth in maturity when compared to the first season.
“Our goal for Season 1 was to introduce the audience to this group of characters that were kids in the middle of a war zone,” explained Raisani. “And [in] Season 2, we take those kids and they grow. But growth is not a straight line. … They’re really trying to figure out who they are.”
While most of the main characters were intorduced in Season 1, Netflix kept one of the franchise's most beloved characters for Season 2: Toph Beifong. The blind earthbending master will be brought to life by Miyako "Miya" Cech.
Cormier, who plays Aang in the live-action series, briefly described the dynamic between the characters as Aang begins his earthbending training with Toph. “I’m learning, she’s teaching," Cormier teased. "There’s quite a bit of argumentativeness, if that’s a word.”
Season 2 of Avatar: The Last Airbender will debut on Netflix on June 25. Filming has already wrapped on the third and final season of the series, so hopefully the wait between Seasons 2 and 3 won't be too long.
