Monstropolis — the Monsters, Inc.-inspired land coming to Walt Disney World in Florida — will open in 2027, Disney confirmed at D23 this weekend. Rather than waiting for the entire area to be complete, parts of Monstrpolis will begin opening its doors to park guests at Disney's Hollywood Studios.
Replacing the beloved Muppets Courtyard, there's a lot of anticipation building towards the opening of Monstropolis. New details about what park guests can expect when visiting were also shared.
When entering Monstropolis, guests will hear the brand new song, "Welcome to Monstropolis," written by the legendary Randy Newman.
The highlight of Monstropolis is undoubtedly the all-new suspended coaster, a first for a Disney park. A video animation of the ride's functionality was shown at D23, revealing the thrilling launch to the ride. Guests will be lifted 40 feet into the air in just four seconds and then blast off toward the door vault.
“Imagineers have been itching to turn that moment into an attraction ever since we saw it for the first time,” Imagineer Michael Hundgen teased last year.
In addition to the new coaster, Monstropolis will be home to Glob Theater, where human visitors are invited to attend a new show. This attraction will introduce humans to Monstropolis , and highlight how similar monsters and humans really are.
“Mike and Sulley will be our hosts,” said Walt Disney Imagineering Vice President Chris Beatty. “Sulley has been working on a small, homespun show, but Mike – ever the showman – has a few surprises up his sleeve that he thinks will bring down the house. Hopefully not literally.”
For food, there's Archie's Scare Pig Pizza, which replaces PizzeRizzo, the quick service pizza and salad restaurant that fit in with the Muppets. Another option will be Harryhausen's Restaurant, the Japanese restaurant where we saw Mike Wazowski take Celia Mae out for a date on her birthday. The famed sushi chef will be brought to life as a new Audio-Animatronics figures.
“A menu unlike anything else we offer at Walt Disney World. It will be a great place to bring your Schmoopsie-poo for a romantic meal," teased Michael Hundgen, Vice President Creative.
Next door to Archie's Scare Pig Pizza will be the Monsters University Alumnit Club. I'm not entirely sure what the point of this is, Disney hints that guests will find "a tribute worth browsing."
Of course, no Disney experience is complete without a souvenir. For that, you can head to the Scareporium, which will be filled with Monsters, Inc. merch.
While Monstropolis will open its doors to humans in 2027, the land's biggest attraction, the coaster, will not be ready in time.
