Season 2 of Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series will be a bit shorter than originally anticipated. Well, sort of.
Knight Edge Media got a hold of the episode titles for the upcoming season, and it appears that the number of episodes in the sophomore season has been reduced from eight down to seven. But while the number of episodes is less than originally anticipated, the actual runtime of the season will be longer than that of the first, which consisted of eight episodes and ran for a total of 430 minutes (7 hours, 10 minutes).
As for the titles of each episode, here they are:
- Episode 1: Somewhere Safe (Written by: Christine Boylan)
- Episode 2: A Fight, Once Begun (Written by: Phinneas Kiyomura)
- Episode 3: City of Walls and Secrets (Written by: Helen Shang)
- Episode 4: The Water Falls, the Stones Emerge (Written by: Teresa Huang)
- Episode 5: Ten Thousand Things (Written by: Gabriel Llanas)
- Episode 6: The Parable of the Two Dragons (Written by: Keely MacDonald)
- Episode 7: Something Broken (Written by: Christine Boylan & Gabriel Llanas)
Season 2 will adapt the Book Two: Earth narrative, picks up after Season 1 with the Gaang’s Earth Kingdom quest. Of course, because the Netflix adaptation has fare fewer episodes than the original animated series, we can expect the writers to condense and even reshape some of the events, which could explain why some of the episode titles appear out of order.
"In Season 2, after a bittersweet victory saving the Northern Water Tribe from the invading Fire Nation, Aang (Gordon Cormier), Katara (Kiawentiio), and Sokka (Ian Ousley) regroup and set off on a mission to convince the elusive Earth King to aid in their battle against fearsome Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim)," Netflix's synopsis reads.
For fans of the original Nickelodeon animated series, you can look forward to the introduction of Toph Beifong, a blind Earthbending prodigy and fan-favorite. Toph will be played by Miya Cech. Cech will be joined by the following new additions to the Season 2 cast:
- Chin Han (Mortal Kombat, Skyscraper) as Long Feng
- Hoa Xuande (The Sympathizer, Top of the Lake: China Girl) as Professor Zei
- Justin Chien (The Brothers Sun, The Great Leap) as King Kuei
- Amanda Zhou (Spinning Out, The Handmaid’s Tale) as Joo Dee
- Crystal Yu (Doctor Who, Good Omens) as Lady Beifong
- Kelemete Misipeka (Sons of Thunder) as The Boulder
- Lourdes Faberes (The Sandman, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre) as General Sung
- Rekha Sharma (Yellowjackets, Battlestar Galactica) as Amita
“We’re looking forward to working with all of our actors again and digging into the deeper, more complicated relationships that develop as their journey continues in Season 2,” executive producers Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani told Tudum last February. “We are going to show the real-world versions of iconic scenes from the original, and explore some of the stories that the animation didn’t. Mainly, we’re looking forward to seeing our gang all together again.”
Season 2 of Avatar: The Last Airbender will premiere on Netflix this year, although no official release date has been announced. Season 3 was filmed back-to-back with Season 2, which hopefully means the wait between seasons won't be too long.
