Hoops, Netflix's adult animated comedy about a foul-mouthed high school basketball coach with hopes of making it to the "big leagues," has been canceled.
According to Variety, which cites an individual with knowledge of the streaming giant's decision to cancel the series, Hoops apparently didn't have the viewership to justify the cost of production. The series received poor reviews upon release in August and holds just a 14% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It didn't fare any better with actual Netflix subscribers, posting a disappointing 49% average audience score. That could explain the lack of viewership numbers.
Jake Johnson (New Girl) voices the hot-headed Coach Ben Hopkins as the series follows his attempt to turn his miserable life around. He believes that making his "God-awful team" play well will help take him to the big leagues of basketball. The show also featured the vocal talents of Ron Funches, Cleo King, Natasha Leggero, A.D. Miles, Steve Berg, Rob Riggle, and Sam Richardson and had guest voices from Nick Swardson, Eric Edelstein, Mary Holland, Gil Ozeri, and Max Greenfield.
With an animated slate that already includes hits such as Big Mouth, Disenchantment, and F Is for Family -- and more on the way with Agent King and Entergalactic -- Netflix has no reason to try and justify throwing more money at a second season of Hoops.
