Fans of the 2004 graphic novel were thrilled to see numerous moments in the new Scott Pilgrim Takes Off trailer that appeared to be recreations of the live-action feature adaptation which starred Michael Cera.

However, Bryan Lee O'Malley- the creator of the series, recently stated on his Instagram Stories that the anime adaptation of the graphic novels would not be a flawless representation of them.

"I don’t know who needs to hear this but… It’s not the books,” O’Malley posted. “I already wrote those and you read them anytime. The show is its own new thing in many ways. Do NOT expect a word-for-word remake. Many fun surprises to come."

Scott Pilgrim consists of six volumes released between 2004-2010.

A live-action film adaptation was released in 2010 that featured an all-star cast such as Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Anna Kendrick, Brie Larson, Chris Evans, Alison Pill, Aubrey Plaza, Ellen Wong, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman, and Mae Whitman.

Despite the A-list cast, the film was a box office flop, grossing $49.3 million worldwide from a production budget of $60 million.  However, it's developed a cult following in the last decade plus since its release.

Studio Science Saru is producing a TV anime adaptation for Netflix that will see all of the live-action film's cast returning to voice their anime counterparts. The anime will consist of 8 episodes and will be released on November 17, 2023.

Edgar Wright, who directed the live-action film, is returning to executive produce the new anime.
