It sounds like Disney icon and original Darkwing Duck voice actor Jim Cummings is less than thrilled to not be a part of the upcoming reboot for Disney+.
In a new interview while on the red carpet for Coyote vs Acme, Cummings was asked about his involvement with the project and while he was diplomatic, he certainly chose his words with intention.
When asked about the status, Cummings stated, "I did a pilot for it several years ago, to see the viability of it coming back, and everybody went nuts. And they are bringing it back, and they’re hiring somebody else to do Terry McGovern’s role of Launchpad, and they’re hiring somebody else to be Darkwing Duck. I hope they get…everything they deserve. Crazy, I don’t know what to tell you."
"I hope they get…everything they deserve," makes it clear that Cummings isn't pleased to be left out in the cold.
However, it seems the Darkwing Duck reboot is picking up from the 2017 DuckTales reboot, which reimagined the original 1990s Darkwing Duck television show as a fictional program within that universe. The show would then inspire a real Duckburg citizen to take up the mantle of Darkwing Duck.
In that episode, Cummings played the actor who starred in the show, while Chris Diamantopoulos voiced the character that becomes the "real-life" crimefighter.
Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are reportedly producing the series, which was first announced in 2020.
Over the years, there have been reports that the project was cancelled, but it was simply retooled, with the original writers' room disbanded and a new group of writers brought in to start from scratch.
This is important information, as early details on the project stated that the show would be a sequel series that would see an older Darkwing Duck resuming crimefighting, similar to Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.
With a new crop of writers brought in, fans are now speculating that the show is moving away from this idea and potentially picking up the concept introduced in the DuckTales reboot, which would naturally see Diamantopoulos voice the titular character.
Disney has not yet officially announced the new voice cast or a targeted premiere date so stay tuned to Toonado for future updates.
