Netflix is apparently moving fast to secure a sequel to what is now the hottest movie of 2025. According to multiple trade reports, Netflix is in talks with Sony Pictures to make a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters.
Deadline notes that the discussions are still in the early stages, which makes sense given that the movie only released this past June. But Netflix seems keen on acting quickly in hopes of capitalizing on the film's incredible success.
Since debuting on Netflix in June, the CG-animated musical adventure has dominated the streaming charts. This week, Netflix confirmed that with more than 236 million views, KPop Demon Hunters is now its most popular movie of all time, dethroning Red Notice.
Hoping to turn this sudden success into a long-lasting franchise, Netflix had been reportedly aiming to create two sequel movies and possibly even a live-action adaptation. The Hollywood Reporter's sources specifically claim that the discussions are revolving around an animated sequel.
Nothing official has been announced yet and Netflix has not commented on the reports.
If you're wondering why Netflix is talking to Sony Pictures about a sequel, it's probably because Sony Pictures Animation (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) developed and produced KPop Demon Hunters. However, in the wake of all the uncertainty surrounding the box office in a post-Covid world, Sony sold the distribution rights to Netflix under a 2021 output deal. That deal reportedly net Sony around $20 million, which isn't much considering how massive KPop Demon Hunters has already become.
It's been reported that Sony retains the rights to produce follow-up films, while Netflix controls sequels, spin-offs, and the lucrative music tie-ins.
With all this speculation surrounding sequels and spin-offs, KPop Demon Hunters creator and co-director Maggie Kang has already been sharing some ideas for potential sequels. Last month, Kang mentioned she is "always" thinking of ideas for a sequel, noting there are still some questions from the first movie that were left unresolved. And in a more recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kang alluded that a future sequel could flesh out HUNTR/X's backstories.
"We were trying to do a non-origin origin story with a concept that's brand new to people," Kang told Entertainment Weekly. "What is it about these girls that brought them into HUNTR/X and made them demon hunters? What is each of their backstory? How did they get chosen? What is that journey like?"
At this point, it's not a matter of if, but when a KPop Demon Hunters sequel officially gets announced.
