It has been exactly thirty years since Hasbro initially began producing their My Little Pony toy line. Technically in 1981, it was still called My Pretty Pony, but Hasbro officially changed the name in 1982.
The toy line was initially aimed at young girls, but as the franchise expanded, a cult following of males who call themselves "bronies" have also made their love for My Little Pony well-known. It was so successful when it premiered in the 80s that within the first decade alone, the toy line sold over 150 million ponies and spurned many animations - two series, two specials, and a full-length feature film.
Fast-forward to today, and My Little Pony is officially set to launch its fifth generation this year, including merchandising and animation. In less than a month, in fact, a new My Little Pony movie will be streaming on Netflix.
My Little Pony: A New Generation features an all-star cast featuring Vanessa Hudgens, Ken Jeong, James Marsden, Kimiko Glenn, and more. Read the official extended synopsis below to get a good idea of what to expect.
"The unimaginable has happened...Equestria has lost its magic! Earth Ponies, Unicorns, and Pegasi are no longer friends and now live separated by species. But idealistic Earth Pony Sunny (Vanessa Hudgens) is determined to find a way to bring enchantment and unity back to their world.
Teaming up with open-hearted Unicorn Izzy (Kimiko Glenn), the pair travel to faraway lands where they encounter the likes of charismatic and brave Pegasi Pipp (Sofia Carson) and Zipp (Liza Koshy) and the ever-responsible fellow Earth Pony Hitch (James Marsden).
Their mission is full of misadventures, but these new best friends each possess their own unique and special gifts that may be just what this ponyverse needs to restore magic and prove that even little ponies can make a big difference."
