Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos revealed at Bloomberg’s Screentime event yesterday evening that the KPop Demon Hunters sequel will receive a large theatrical rollout befitting of a cultural tentpole when the film hits theaters in 2029.
Said Sarandos, "We’re going to do a big wide release for Narnia next year, and then we’ll do a big wide release for Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory at the end of the year. We think they’ll do great, and when the KPop Demon Hunters sequel comes, you can expect a very broad theatrical release.”
These remarks from Sarandos shouldn't be too much of a surprise, as the film went on to release a special, sing-a-long version of the film in select cinemas for a limited theatrical run.
Despite already releasing on Netflix to great fanfare in June 2025, the sing-a-long theatrical release was the #1 movie in America two months later n August 2025, grossing an estimated $19+ million, crushing its initial projection of $15 million.
KPop Demon Hunters, co-written and co-directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, follows the thrilling adventures of Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong), and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo), three young-adult pop idols who make up the group Huntr/x. Born into an ancient lineage of demon slayers, the trio must balance their glamorous careers with the dangerous responsibility of combating supernatural threats.
Their skills are put to the ultimate test when their most formidable demonic adversary (Lee Byung-hun) orchestrates the rise of a rival K-pop boy band designed to siphon the souls of unsuspecting fans.
Faced with this sinister challenge, Rumi, Mira, and Zoey must fight with everything they’ve got to protect both the world and the bond that holds them together.
Adding a meta layer of intrigue, the two fictional K-pop groups portrayed in the film have skyrocketed in popularity, achieving chart-topping success that rivals real-world sensations like BTS and Blackpink, cementing the movie’s blend of supernatural action and pop culture spectacle.
EJAE, the singing voice for Rumi previously revealed that she hopes the sequel dives into, "More Korean traditional stuff – traditional history, music, food."
Audrey Nuna, the singing voice for Mira, added, "I want to see the girls in different cities. I want to see what they bring [globally], because this film has had such a global impact. I think the movie and reality have been having a really crazy conversation with each other, and I'd love to see that continue."
Lastly, Rei Ami, who provides the music vocals for Zoey said she wants to see how Huntr/x was formed. "I would love to see the origin story of how the girls got together."
"When they aren’t selling out stadiums, Kpop superstars Rumi, Mira and Zoey use their secret identities as badass demon hunters to protect their fans from an ever-present supernatural threat. Together, they must face their biggest enemy yet – an irresistible rival boy band of demons in disguise.”
