Netflix has shared an official teaser for My Dad The Bounty Hunter, a new CG-animated series created by Academy Award-winning director Everett Downing (Maya and the Three, Hair Love).
My Dad The Bounty Hunter is an action-comedy series about an intergalactic bounty hunter whose family back on Earth has no idea what he does for a living. But when his two kids accidentally hitch a ride into outer space, they not only discover that their average joe dad is anything but boring, but get caught up in his latest mission.
The hyperdrive adventures of two kids who discover their seemingly average joe dad is actually an intergalactic bounty hunter! Dodging dangerous aliens and laser fights galore, this family bonding time goes to the extreme.
The series stars Laz Alonso (The Boys), Yvonne Orji (Insecure), Priah Ferguson (Stranger Things), Yvette Nicole Brown (Community), JeCobi Swain (Troop Zero), Leslie Uggams (Deadpool), Rob Riggle (The Hangover) and Jim Rash (Community). It was created by Everett Downing, co-director of the 2019 Academy Award-winning short film Hair Love (Best Animated Short Film), and Patrick Harpin (Hotel Transylvania 2, Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation). Downing and Harpin also serve as executive producers on the series.
When the series was first announced back in 2020, Downing described My Dad The Bounty Hunter as a "love letter to animation, science fiction, and Black families rolled into a crazy action-comedy."
"We threw everything we love about sci-fi into this show, but it’s the family at the center of the story that we’re most excited about," he added.
It's interesting that My Dad The Bounty Hunter focuses on a father's relationship with his children as there were similar themes in Downing's Hair Love. The award-winning short, which aimed to counter stereotypes about Black fathers, followed the story of a man who must do his daughter's hair for the first time. While there's certainly a comedic aspect to My Dad The Bounty Hunter, I wouldn't be surprised to see sentimental moments in the series as well.
My Dad The Bounty Hunter doesn't yet have a release date, although the teaser trailer does say that it's coming soon to the streaming service.
In the meantime, we've got another sci-fi-inspired, family-focused movie coming soon as well. Disney Animation Studios' Strange World is set to release in theaters on November 23, 2022. Like My Dad The Bounty Hunter, there is a similar focus on family and diversity in the upcoming Disney sci-fi comedy adventure.
