The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Mattel Films' Masters of the Universe live-action movie has now found a new home at Netflix. Production is expected to begin this summer with the Nee brothers (The Lost City) set to take the helm from a screenplay they penned alongside Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings writer David Callaham.
Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch, and DeVon Franklin are among those producing, while Robbie Brenner and Kevin McKeon have been tapped to oversee the movie on behalf of Mattel.
As for He-Man, West Side Story actor Kyle Allen is set to play the iconic hero. Noah Centineo was attached for a while, but ended up leaving the project when the last iteration fell apart. Other credits include American Horror Story and The Path; however, Masters of the Universe looks set to mark his big break in Hollywood and a star-making performance here could put him on the map in a big way.
In terms of plot details, we have none, but common sense says we'll see He-Man square off with Skeletor! The Nee Brothers have been attached since Masters of the Universe was in the works at Sony Pictures, so past reports that He-Man's relationship with Battle Cat will be put front and centre could still be accurate.
Netflix investing in this franchise isn't a surprise, especially as the streaming service is already home to Kevin Smith's Masters of the Universe: Revelation and the CG-animated series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (which soon returns for its second season). A live-action movie could mark the beginning of a successful new franchise for the streamer, so it should be one to keep an eye on.
Masters of the Universe doesn't currently have a release date, but stay tuned for updates.
