Bringing an iconic animated character to life for over three decades is no small feat. But for Tim Allen, returning to the recording booth for Toy Story 5 brought an unexpected and humbling challenge.

Speaking to Deadline, the 72-year-old actor, who has voiced Buzz Lightyear for 31 years, opened up about the struggle he faced when trying to reprise the iconic Space Ranger in the upcoming film. The actor recalled during the first recording sessions for Toy Story 5, the crew noticed an immediate difference in his performance.

"We did the first session and everybody said, in a nice way, 'Buzz is starting to sound a little old!'" Allen admitted. "Because I panicked after that, I couldn't get my voice to register, and it was gravelly."

The sudden realization that his natural register had shifted sparked a wave of anxiety for the veteran comedian. The distinct, heroic cadence of Buzz Lightear — a voice that Allen had brought to life since 1995 — seemed entirely out of reach, leading him to believe Pixar might recast the role.

Thankfully, that didn't turn out to be the case. As Allen revealed, he learned from the help of an opera and stage coach that it wasn't so much that his voice has changed over the years, but more so that he now needed to warm up.

He explained: "Luckily, we got an opera and stage coach from New York City. She got with me she said, 'Your voice doesn't get old, but at your age you gotta warm up....' Most opera singers warm up. I never warmed up. It was weird because I said, 'You're going to get somebody else to do this aren't you?' They said no, and the voice came back. It was a real challenge, and because of that I took care of my voice."

While Tim Allen’s return to the role is a welcome win, fans who grew up with the franchise are facing the undeniable reality that the cast we love is getting older. Few expected a fifth Toy Story installment, especially given how definitively the fourth film wrapped up. Even Tom Hanks, the voice of Woody, thought the series might end after Toy Story 4. But here we are, now 30 years later, gearing up for at least one more rodeo.

After deciding to stay with Bo Peep and help abandoned toys find owners, Toy Story 5 sees Woody return, only to find Jessie, Buzz, and the rest of the closet toys confront their most modern threat yet: the addictive grip of an electric tablet. As Bonnie becomes glued to a glowing screen, the classic toys launch a rescue mission for her imagination.

Toy Story 5 is slated to hit theaters on June 19, 2026. Tickets are currently on sale with initial box office estimates pointing toward a $150 million opening in North America.
