Netflix has confirmed that production is underway for season two of its acclaimed animated series Blue Eye Samurai.
Co-creators Michael Green and Amber Noizumi offered a behind-the-scenes preview, revealing that the story will pick up directly after the events of season one, with Mizu’s quest for vengeance taking her to London.
The creative team promised that Mizu’s next chapter will be “bigger, wilder, and more emotional,” while continuing to center on her pursuit of her father, an Anglo man who cast out Mizu and her mother in 17th-century Japan. They also teased possible twists, suggesting that certain characters thought dead may still have a role to play.
Returning characters include the Swordmaker, Taigen, Ringo, and Akemi, whose personal journeys are expected to intertwine even more deeply with Mizu’s path. Though Netflix has not yet announced a release date, the new season is slated to arrive in 2026.
The production team reaffirmed their dedication to a “live-action philosophy” in crafting the animation and fight sequences, once again relying on professional stunt performers to deliver realistic, visceral, and cinematic action.
Blue Eye Samurai cemented its place as a top-tier anime series by taking home the prestigious Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program at 2004's ceremony, triumphing over formidable contenders like The Simpsons, Bob's Burgers, X-Men '97, and Scavengers Reign. This victory speaks volumes about the quality and impact of the series.
Coupled with impressive viewership numbers, Blue Eye Samurai now stands as one of Netflix's most-watched, original animated programs.
The season one finale of Blue Eye Samurai sees Mizu’s revenge-driven journey reach a critical turning point in a fierce showdown with Fowler. Just as she’s poised to strike him down, Fowler reveals that the remaining men she seeks are not in Japan but in London.
Recognizing that she needs his knowledge to track them, Mizu chooses to spare him. The season closes with Mizu setting sail for London, with Fowler held captive. Meanwhile, Princess Akemi embraces authority in Edo, and Ringo makes his way back to the Swordfather.
