Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse debuted all the way back in 2018 and was an incredible success. The animated movie earned critical acclaim (even being awarded the Academy Award for "Best Animated Feature Film"), made bank at the box office, and made lesser-known Marvel Comics characters such as Miles Morales into to household names.
Both a sequel and spinoff are in the works (as well as a television series, apparently). Back in November 2019, Sony announced that the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel would see the like of day on April 8th, 2022. However, that release date is now obsolete. The change likely has something to do with the coronavirus pandemic that's unfortunately still ongoing.
Now, the animated sequel is set to hit theatres on October 7th, 2022 (via ComicBookMovie.com). That's a six-month delay but certainly understandable given the current predicament.
Joaquim Dos Santos will direct, Dave Callaham writes. Since the possibilities are endless, as far as where a sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse could go, it's unknown whether or how much of the cast of the first instalment will reprise their roles. Shameik Moore will presumably return as Miles Morales since he was the movie's breakout character.
Oscar Isaac will likely feature as Spider-Man 2099 since he featured in the first instalment's post-credits scene. The rest is up in the air, though, we do know for sure that the sequel will feature "Japanese Spider-Man" from the 1978 live-action series — find out more on that here.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 is set to arrive in theatres on October 8th, 2022.
