Over the weekend, Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment released a trailer for Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires, an original animated take on Batman inspired by Mesoamerican history.

The upcoming animated feature from Warner Bros. Animation, Ánima, and Chatrone reimagines the legendary DC Super Hero amid ancient Mexico, immersing audiences in Mesoamerican civilization with a fresh take on Batman mythology.

Unlike traditional Batman stories, this reimagining follows Yohualli Coatl as the new Dark Knight instead of Bruce Wayne. After his father is killed by Spanish conquistadors, Yohualli flees to Tenochtitlán, where he trains under his mentor in the temple of the bat god Tzinacan, mastering the skills and weaponry needed to fight the invasion and seek justice for his father.

The movie not only reimagines Batman through the lens of Mesoamerican culture, but many of his iconic frinds and foes. In the trailer, we get a glimpse of Jaguar Woman and the enchanting Forest Ivy, among others.

This bold reimagining of the Batman legend unfolds within the vibrant and fierce culture of 16th century Mesoamerica. In the time of the Aztec empire, tragedy strikes Yohualli Coatl, a young Aztec boy, when his father is murdered by Spanish conquistadors. To warn King Moctezuma and his high priest, Yoka, of imminent danger, Yohualli escapes to Tenochtitlán. There, he trains in the temple of the bat god Tzinacan with his mentor, developing equipment and weaponry to confront the Spanish invasion and avenge his father’s death. Along the way, he encounters key figures like the fierce Jaguar Woman and the enchanting Forest Ivy.

Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires is directed by Juan Meza-Léon from a screenplay by Ernie Altbacker. Sam Register, Tomás Yankelevich, and Michael Uslan serve as executive producers, with José C. García de Letona, Fernando De Fuentes, Carina Schulze, Aaron D. Berger, Jim Krieg, and Kimberly S. Moreau as producers.

The film will release digitally in the United States on September 19, and will be available on Amazon Prime Video, AppleTV, Google Play, and Fandango at Home, among other digital storefronts. A physical release on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD will come just a few days later on September 23.

The movie will be available in both Spanish and English-language versions. The Spanish voice cast stars Horacio García Rojas, Omar Chaparro, and Álvaro Morte, whiel the English voice cast features Jay Hernandez (Magnum P.I., Suicide Squad) and Raymond Cruz (Sons of Anarchy, The Mayans, Better Call Saul).
