In 1964, Julie Andrews brought Mary Poppins to life on screen. In December, Mary Poppins returned to theatres in
Mary Poppins Returns with Emily Blunt as the titular, magical nanny.
Though Andrews showed support for the recent Emily Blunt-starrer before it debuted, she didn't publicly voice her thoughts on the film until now. The actress recently featured on
Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen and responded to a fan's question with her opinion on
Mary Poppins Returns — long story short; she loved it.
"I loved it. Yeah. Look, the first film was made over 50 years ago, 60 years ago. I think it's about time a second one was allowed. But also, this had nothing to do with the first one. It wasn't as if they were repeating the first story. They had umpteen P. L. Travers books of Mary Poppins in the vault. So they had to make a new one," Andrews explained.
Also featuring on the talk show was Whoopi Goldberg. The actress and comedian promptly told Andrews that she will always be Mary Poppins to her. However, she appreciates that modern children can enjoy the new version as well as the old. Goldberg also suggested that they do another
Mary Poppins film in thirty years time and Andrews liked the idea of that:
"There will, I hope."
Currently, it isn't thought that Emily Blunt will return for a sequel to
Mary Poppins Returns. Therefore, another in many years time with a new actress could totally happen. As for Blunt, she's still working with Disney on
Jungle Cruise —
more on that here.
