Disney celebrated 40 years of Pixar Animation Studios at D23 today, with a first look at Incredibles 3 kicking things off. The movie, which follows 2004's The Incredibles and 2018's Incredibles 2, will round out the trilogy by shifting the spotlight to the kids.
Violet, Dash, and Jack-Jack have been sneaking out at night to protect the city, though keeping the latter under control remains easier said than done. The Super Hero League will once again be featured, as will Edna Mode.
However, Mr. Incredible will struggle to remain relevant as he comes to terms with his mortality. The villain, who is being kept under wraps for now beyond a brief tease shown to attendees, will reportedly help explore the idea that not all superheroes are good.
Pixar also shared a first look at Coco 2 and confirmed that Benjamin Bratt is returning as the villainous Ernesto de la Cruz. He's back for revenge, but Coco—now a teenager—will get a helping hand from Mamá Coco in the Land of the Dead.
The studio later announced Ghost Market, a new original story which looks a lot like Pixar's first crack at a (kid-friendly) horror movie.
Earlier this year, Incredibles 3 writer Brad Bird explained why he wouldn't want to age up the franchise's young leads. "If you lose that, you lose the archetypal aspect of it, and that's something that is important to me," he told The Direct. "In other words, they were meant to represent parts of life that you go through."
"And so, those are family archetypes, and ageing them up doesn't help that at all," the filmmaker continued. "People just keep thinking that ageing them up is going to make them somehow hipper or cooler, or more like them, and it's like, no, it won't."
Incredibles 3 and Ghost Market are both set for release in 2028, with Coco 2 following in 2029. A new look at next year's Gatto has also just dropped, which you'll find below along with other first-look reveals straight from D23.
