In a surprise move, Netflix has secured a deal with Nickelodeon to produce animated films for The Loud House and the latest animated TMNT series, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. What makes the deal significant is the fact that Netflix won't stream episodes of either TV series and will only produce film continuations. Could this be the future of the streaming platform? A destination for film continuations of popular television series? The news definitely has film pundits pondering.
In Viacom's first-quarter earnings call with investors, CEO Bob Bakish stated, "This is both incremental business and powerful promotion for the two franchises."
Both films are slated to go into production later this year. Release dates are currently unknown.
