It was known that Disney were planning on remaking
Peter Pan sometime soon (as they're planning to do with all of their animated classics, it seems) but information regarding it has certainly sprung up out of nowhere as of late. Last month, it was reported that production will kick off in April and the title will be
Peter Pan & Wendy —
find out more here.
Even more recently, it was reported that Margot Robbie has been offered the iconic role of Tinker Bell —
check out that report here. Similarly, reports have now surfaced that the dastardly role of Captain Hook has been offered to Joaquin Phoenix.
Phoenix recently blew audiences away with his portrayal of the
Joker in the Academy Award-nominated film of the same name. Phoenix himself is also nominated for an Academy Award — specifically in the Best Actor category — as he has been four times now. He's also won a multitude of other notable awards over the years and very recently. Basically, he's a pretty great actor.
The Illuminerdi (the source of this scoop) were able to acquire a breakdown of Captain Hook's character as well as that of his first-mate Smee.
"An unhinged, dramatic, and menacing swordsman, who is out to seek revenge on Peter Pan for cutting his hand off and feeding it to a crocodile. When Hook takes Wendy’s brothers John and Michael hostage he uses them as bait to lure Peter Pan."
And Smee; "A rotund fellow with a great grey beard, Smee is Captain Hook’s main henchman and servant who will do anything to please his captain."
Similar to the report about Margot Robbie being offered the role of Tinker Bell; Disney has simply put the offer out there and likely has other actors beyond just Phoenix in mind for the role. That is to say, the part isn't definitively Phoenix's yet.
