The Powerpuff Girls are returning to television, but it won't be the way you remembered them. The animated superheroes are returning as part of a live-action series ordered by The CW, but there's an even bigger twist than that.
According to Variety, the live-action Powerful Girls will reenvision the superheroes "as disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting." With the world once again in need of their crime-fighting skills, the former superhero team will need to decide if they should reunite.
The upcoming project is based on the Cartoon Network animated series created by Craig McCracken. The original series followed three superhero crimefighters named Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, who were created when Professor Utonium combined "sugar, spice, and everything nice with the mysterious Chemical X." The series ran for six seasons and 78 episodes between 1998 and 2005. The Powerful Girls Movie was released in 2002. A reboot of the series released in 2016 and ran for three seasons and 122 episodes.
Development of The CW's live-action project was actually first announced back in August. It comes by way of writers and executive producers Heather Regnier and Diablo Cody, with the latter executive producing via Vita Vera Films. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and David Madden will executive produce via the Berlanti Productions banner, while Erika Kennair and Warner Bros. Television will produce the show.
