For a whole generation of us, the definitive Batman was drawn. Bruce Timm's 1992 animated series set the bar no cartoon Gotham since has topped.
So it means something that Timm himself is back running Batman: Caped Crusader, a hard-boiled, 1940s-styled Gotham that plays like the animated Batman you grew up on with the safety rails taken off. Season 2 is almost here, and Prime Video is dropping all 10 episodes at once on July 31st, so you can binge the entire run in a single sitting.
The road here was bumpy. The show was originally developed for HBO Max, got shelved during the Warner Bros. Discovery cutbacks, and Amazon rescued it. That gamble paid off: the first season, also 10 episodes, landed a 100% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes when it debuted in 2024. That reception is a big part of why a second season is arriving this fast!
The Rogues Lining Up
The trailer front-loads the villains, and it's a deep-cut lineup pulled straight from classic comic lore. Here's who Batman's up against:
- Riddler - Edward Nygma returns as the season's central threat, with Dave Franco back in the role after his Season 1 tease.
- The Joker - teased in the shadows at the very end of Season 1, the Clown Prince is saved for the trailer's final beat, and Gotham's most dangerous new arrival is finally stepping into the light.
- Mad Hatter - reimagined as an older woman who needles Batman on her own Gotham talk show, voiced by comedy veteran Laraine Newman.
- Poison Ivy - the footage shows what looks like this world's take on Ivy, reworked into a femme-fatale figure tied to Nygma.
- Deeper cuts - Scarecrow, Man-Bat, Roxy Rocket, and Solomon Grundy all surface, plus the return of Harley Quinn.
The core voice cast comes back too: Hamish Linklater as Bruce Wayne and Batman, Christina Ricci as Catwoman, Minnie Driver as the Penguin, Jamie Chung as Harley Quinn, Diedrich Bader as Harvey Dent, and John DiMaggio as Detective Bullock. Jason Watkins returns as Alfred and Krystal Joy Brown as Barbara Gordon.
If you never watched the first run, all 10 episodes of Season 1 are streaming on Prime Video right now, included with a Prime membership. It's a tight binge, and worth doing before the 31st so the new arcs land the way they should.
Season 2 picks up threads the finale left dangling. The first run built to a tragedy for one major character, and the show made a bold choice with his arc that I won't spell out here for anyone still catching up. The ending stinger is the one that matters: the final moments planted the seeds of the Joker, and the new episodes pay that off from minute one.
Why It Carries The Animated-Series Torch
Bruce Timm, the co-creator of Batman: The Animated Series, is showrunning alongside James Tucker, and the executive producers are J.J. Abrams and The Batman director Matt Reeves, under Abrams' Bad Robot banner. That's about as strong a pedigree as animated Batman gets.
The aesthetic is the giveaway. Timm has pushed the timeline back to a noir 1940s Gotham of fedoras, rotary phones, and shadowy alleys, and he's described this Batman as so early in his career he's still an urban myth, barely into "Week Two." That early start lets the show rebuild the rogues gallery from scratch, which is exactly what Season 2 is doing with the Riddler and the Hatter.
Which rogue are you most fired up to see Timm's crew reinvent?
