For a long time, the running narrative thread of Rick and Morty was Rick C-137's mission to get revenge against Rick Prime. In season 7 he got his wish but the sudden impact of this moment is leading many fans to assume that the award-winning adult animation show is setting the stage for its final run of episodes.
Though the series was renewed for enough episodes to carry it through a tenth season, some fans are speculating that the behind-the-scenes drama with co-creator Justin Roiland and a sizable drop in ratings has Adult Swim rethinking that decision.
However, that's not the cast as series co-creator Dan Harmon is already talking about seasons 8 and 9.
Speaking to The Verge, Harmon stated, "Season 7 just represents one more brick in that road, and it’s season 8, which is already written, when that comes out, I think it’ll be even more so. It’ll feel like a return to form and kind of like a “we’re back, baby” kind of feeling, and hopefully, season 9 will be that but, you know, even more so. But it’ll be because it’s been a gradual process of just trying to get our wind in our sails again."
Although some fans of Rick and Morty aren't convinced that Rick Prime is dead, the behind-the-scenes video unequivocally states that he is dead and that his death was straightforward.
This is because the real message isn't that Rick Prime is dead and the revenge is pointless, but rather that C-137 must now discover his purpose after losing his entire motivation for existing for most of his life.

Now that Rick Prime has been eliminated, it appears like Evil Morty will take center stage as the main antagonist of the program.
But considering how abruptly Rick Prime left, don't be shocked if, by the time season 7 concludes, Evil Morty also gets his comeuppance.
There are currently three episodes left in season 7 of Rick and Morty with S07E08: Rise of the Numbericons: The Movie set to air this Sunday on Adult Swim.
