Animation legend Genndy Tartakovsky (Hotel Transylvania, Sym-Bionic Titan), who has previously won five Emmy awards for his work on Star Wars: Clone Wars, Samurai Jack, and Primal, has revealed that he's developing a new animated series for Adult Swim, titled Heist Safari.
Tartakosky made the announcement during Adult Swim's panel at this week's Annecy Animation Festival in France.
Heist Safari, will have an initial order of 10-episodes and will be a comedic musical, that follows three frog brothers out to commit a robbery.
The series begins with the death of the brother's father. Reuniting at his funeral, the control freak James, neurotic Isac and little George learn that they will only inherit their father's fortune if they can successfully rob a bank and steal the contents of the mysterious bank vault #88.
Each brother secretly cuts a side deal with the Japanese yakuza (tigers), Russian mafia (hippos), and Italian mob (gorillas), all while the police (wildebeests) begin to grow suspicious about the brothers.
On the surface, the pitch sounds like a more adult-oriented take on the fan-favorite Disney's 2016 animated feature film Zootopia, albeit one that will likely have Tartakovsky's trademark action and dark humor.
"This whole show came to me because of how quick media is getting. We’re all flicking through entertainment this quickly. And so asked myself: How can I do a show that’s fast and intense but is going to trap you so that you can’t click past it,” Tartakovsky said.
The series will reportedly use EDM music as its score and will not release episodes in chronological order.
In addition to Heist Safari, Tartakovsky is also continuing work on Unicorn: Warriors Eternal and a spin-off anthology series, set in the world of Primal.
While there's been very little update on Unicorn: Warriors Eternal since its first season finale aired on June 30, 2023, the show has not been officially canceled and is still considered ongoing.
The stand-alone second-season episode "The Primal Theory" will serve as the basis for the Primal spin-off. After finishing his work on New Line Cinema's adult animated comedy picture Fixed, Tartakovsky stated that he plans to start work the third season.
