Having won 5 total Emmy awards, the wait for a new Primal season has been brutal. The last update on the series came in 2023, with Adult Swim confirming that it was in production.
Now, speaking to Collider, series creator Genndy Tartakovsky is providing new details on the show's return. Said the Samurai Jack creator, "It's a new level. Everything that we did in the first season, we upped a bit in the second season, and the third season is even more. I can't say anything without giving everything away, but it's just more, and it's shocking, and it's unstoppable. At some point, you're like, 'I can't believe I'm watching this.' "
He added, "Quality-wise, animation-wise, story-wise, emotionally, I don't want to oversell it, but rarely have I been proud of a project like this. At the end of the day, we'll have these 30 episodes, and thinking back to Dexter and Powerpuff Girls and even Samurai Jack, how much our quality wavered just because of the process and everything, this is just so solid. And to have 30 solid, incredible [episodes] for a modest budget, I'm really proud of it."
Tartakovsky added that San Diego Comic-Con in July was likely too early for any Primal season 3 details to be revealed but he did state that he believes New York Comic-Con in October is when he thinks the show's marketing campaign will start to kick off.
Genndy Tartakovsky previously revealed plans for a third season of Primal that would shift focus to an entirely new cast of characters. His vision is to evolve the show into an anthology format, taking inspiration from the standalone Season 2 episode, “The Primal Theory,” which broke away from the main storyline and hinted at the series’ broader thematic potential.
During the Adult Swim's panel at the Annecy Animation Festival, it was revealed that Primal season 3 will premiere in 2026.
Fans are now buzzing with theories about what shape Primal’s new anthology format might take. Could Season 3 follow a generational thread, exploring the lives of Spear and Fang’s descendants? Or will it lean into a more episodic approach, telling self-contained stories set in different eras and worlds? The possibilities are wide open—and speculation is running wild.
Stay tuned to Toonado for future updates as we await word on an exact release date.
