Monsters Inc., a Pixar film franchise, is centered around two best monster buds – Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan, AKA Sulley – as they accidentally unleash a human child onto their monster-ridden city after a serious of events. It’s up to them to bring the human child, aptly named Boo, back to her world. Of course, this being Pixar, the movie is heartfelt and sad with creatures that don’t really fit the norm of “scary.”
Sulley is intimidating, but falls short of entirely being something that can spook kids. Likewise to Mike, who’s just a green ball with one eye and short nub horns. That’s where North of the Border comes in. Specializing in making unnerving, spooky, or realistic sculptures based on pop culture icons, he felt it was his duty to make these two lovable Pixar mascots into something befitting their monster roots.
The video showcased his process of molding the clay for Mike and making his face a lot more mouth than what we're used to. Of course, that's just the molding process and he moved onto Sulley before painting. Sulley was a bit more of a task, requiring aluminum foil wrapped around wiring in order to bulk the model up before adding the clay.
Once Adam got to the painting and final detail process, that's when it all really came together. MIke's got an unnerving red outline around his gaping mouth lined with plenty of teeth ready for chomping while his singular bloodshot eyeball was coated with some UV Resin to get that desirable gloss.
Sulley, though, was a fair bit more intricate, primarily due to his size and different techniques he'd need to use. Chief among his choices were things like taking inspiration from the Wampa from the Star Wars franchise and using some blue fur he got that he basically immediately regrets.
The finished product showcases what we could get if Pixar actually wanted to bring the Monsters Inc. duo into the horror scene.
