While Toy Story 4 was the perfect ending for Woody's saga, we haven't seen the last of Buzz Lightyear. The beloved space ranger is set to star in his very own solo film, titled Lightyear.
Announced during Disney Investor Day, Lightyear is "the definitive story of the original Buzz Lightyear." It's not so much about the toy itself; instead, it will focus on the space pilot that inspired the Buzz Lightyear action figure that we saw in Pixar's Toy Story movies.
Chris Evans will be starring in the role as the young test pilot, which caught some fans of the Toy Story franchise by surprise. But it makes sense that Tim Allen wouldn't be returning -- at least not that we know of -- since the film is focused on the original space hero and not the toy itself.
"I don't even have the words," Evans wrote on Twitter following the film's announcement. "And just to be clear, this isn't Buzz Lightyear the toy. This is the origin story of the human Buzz Lightyear that the toy is based on."
It sounds like this is actually going to be a full-fledged sci-fi movie from Pixar. We know Buzz Lightyear is a Space Ranger on a mission to protect the galaxy from the Evil Emperor Zurg. Perhaps we'll see Evans' hero protecting the galaxy from another type of hostile alien species.
Pixar's Lightyear is being helmed by Angus MacLane, co-director of Finding Dory. The movie is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 17, 2022. Hopefully, this whole coronavirus pandemic will be beyond us by then and theaters will still be around.
