On Tuesday, the Oscar nominations were announced, honoring the excellence in film over the past year. Since there are only five nominees for each category, there is always bound to be talented actors, directors, designers, and animators who deserve recognition, but don't make the cut.
Word of those who were snubbed a nomination circulated after the nominees were announced, including Claire Foy for Best Supporting Actress in First Man and Bradley Cooper for directing A Star is Born. Among those great artists who did not receive an Oscar nomination included Kevin Baillie, the co-founder of the vfx studio Atomic Fiction, as well as the production visual effects supervisor for the film Welcome to Marwen, starring Steve Carell.
According to Cartoon Brew, Baillie was on a shortlist for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for his work on Welcome to Marwen, giving him a 50% chance of being nominated. Unfortunately, as Baillie discovered on Tuesday morning at 5:oo a.m., he was not among the five nominees put up for the award.
While many oscar nominees post reaction videos of themselves receiving the good news, Baillie decided to post his own reaction video as well. Despite being snubbed by the Academy, Baillie transformed his disappointing experience into a positive one. Many fans responded positively to Baillie’s video, showing support for the vfx supervisor’s willingness to share the emotional moment on Twitter.
“[T]he whole experience has been very special. Figured that, if I’m gonna share the high moments, I’ve gotta share the low ones too.”
