Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a refreshing take on the iconic web-slinger. Its unique approach to telling the story of a comic book character that we've seen brought to life on the big screen countless times was met with wild enthusiasm and not just from your typical comic book fan, but even past stars.
Andrew Garfield, who played Peter Parker in
The Amazing Spider-Man movies, was hosted on The Empire Film Podcast this week and was asked his thoughts on
Into the Spider-Verse.
"I loved it," Garfield said on
The Empire Film Podcast.
"I thought it was what Spider-Man should be; wildly inventive, true to not just one but several versions of the character and the comics. And for everybody. And Funny. And irreverent. And creative. And I think maybe you can only really do that with animation. They could take more risks. I was envious."
Garfield's praise of the risks that
Into the Spider-Verse took is particularly noteworthy, especially since the actor made waves when he suggested the notion of Peter Parker being exploring bisexuality in one of the
Spider-Man movies.
The Amazing Spider-Man was actually met with pretty positive reviews. The sequel, however, was met with far less praise, though Garfield (and his chemistry with Emma Stone) was one of the movie's bright spots. Sadly, Garfield never did get a shot at a third installment, and his public breakup with Sony has been well-documented.
In any case, given Garfield's love for the character and fans obviously taking a liking to him as Peter Parker, the idea of him returning in a sequel to
Into the Spider-Verse in some capacity was brought up on the podcast.
"I'm forever a Spider-Man fan. I'm never going to compute that I got to play that part for two movies. I wasn't talked to about it, but I'm... we'll see," he said, adding,
"To be honest, I'm really happy just being a fan again."
