Deadline reports that Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has webbed up the biggest opening day of 2023 with an amazing $51.7 million. That means it's topped everything from The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($31.7 million) to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ($48.1 million), a result Sony Pictures is bound to be happy about.

The third-best opening day for a Spider-Man movie behind No Way Home ($121.9 million) and Spider-Man 3 ($59.8 million), the expectation now is that the sequel could have an opening weekend of $113.5 million.

However, it may go as high as $125 million; it's simply too soon to say.

As for how moviegoers have responded to Across the Spider-Verse, it's received a spectacular A CinemaScore. That puts it on par with Homecoming and Far From Home, but behind A+ titles No Way Home and its predecessor, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

It's going to be interesting to find out where the movie goes from here, particularly with Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and The Flash on the horizon. Both will pose stiff competition, but it's hard to imagine them receiving the same overwhelmingly positive critical response.

While 2024's Beyond the Spider-Verse is expected to wrap up this trilogy, something tells us Sony is already thinking of ways to expand Miles Morales' animated franchise.

"A contender for the best Spider-Man film yet and easily the greatest animated movie ever made," we said in our review"Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is a jaw-dropping spectacle, a feast for the senses, and an instant Marvel classic."

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is now playing in theaters.
