Sonic the Hedgehog debuted in theatres back in February and quickly rose to become the highest-grossing movie of all time (in North America) that's based on a video game — surpassing Pokémon: Detective Pikachu. Based on the movie's success at the box office and it's post-credits scenes, it seems that a sequel is inevitable.
However, Paramount Pictures are yet to cement anything and officially announce a follow-up to the video game movie. Sonic the Hedgehog movie director Jeff Fowler certainly seems enthusiastic to return and expand the "Sonic cinematic universe" — find out more on that here.
So, when should we expect an official announcement? Any day now, according to respected box office analyst Jeff Bock. Bock hails from Exhibitor Relations and recently told USA Today that it's likely Paramount Pictures will soon officially announce their plans for a follow-up. It seems the whole coronavirus pandemic is what has taken them so long to give it the go-ahead.
"No doubt 'Sonic the Hedgehog' is just getting started. A sequel is imminent for Paramount Studios, who desperately needs new franchises," says Jeff Bock, box office analyst for Exhibitor Relations. "I’d expect an announcement as soon as the world starts spinning in a direction we all recognize again."
What's more, Bock believes that movies based on video game properties will begin to prosper once more — now that Sonic the Hedgehog and Pokémon: Detective Pikachu have proven to be successes. "Video game adaptations are definitely hot properties again in Hollywood thanks to Sonic and his box office antics."
Sonic the Hedgehog is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
Sonic the Hedgehog is now available digitally — Blu-ray and Ultra 4K HD release set for May 19th, 2020.
