It's been over two months since Sonic the Hedgehog debuted in theatres and almost a month since it became available to be purchased online — find out more on that here. The live-action movie based on the video game series of the same name stands as the highest-grossing video game movie of all time (at the domestic box office) — more on that here.
Therefore, you would think that a sequel would have already been confirmed and announced but alas that is not the case. However, director Jeff Fowler is confident that one will be announced after the current worldwide pandemic subsides. Earlier this month, the director made clear his desire to feature Tails in a future instalment and he recently reiterated that position.
"There's so many more great characters to bring in and just more stories to tell," Fowler told USA Today. "(But) nothing would bring me more happiness than getting another shot with these characters and to tell more stories. We'd love to do more with the Sonic cinematic universe."
Furthermore, he goes on to address the fans' want for Tails and Knuckles to be in a Sonic the Hedgehog movie sequel — as well as countless other fan-favourite characters. "We would get that question a lot from fans, 'Is Tails in it? Is Knuckles in it?' All these fan-favourite characters," says Fowler.
"We had to do that little fan Easter egg with Tails and say, 'We know you love these characters. We will absolutely get to them in future stories if we're able to.'" It's interesting that Fowler specifically says "future stories" given that it was rumoured that Paramount Pictures was considering a Knuckles solo movie a while back — more on that here.
Nonetheless, it seems that Sonic the Hedgehog fans have a lot to look forward to!
