Sonic the Hedgehog only debuted in theatres on February 14th but it's already available to purchase and download online — find out more on that here. Based on the video game series of the same name, Sonic the Hedgehog stars Ben Schwartz as the titular speedster, Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, and James Marsden as Tom Wachowski.
Jeff Fowler served as the movie's director and it was more or less his directorial debut — having only previously directed animated shorts. Recently, Marsden spoke about what he would like to see in a sequel to the video game movie. Essentially, the actor wants more action and more beloved characters from the video games — most notably, Tails.
Well, it seems he's going to get his wish as Fowler recently declared his excitement to see Sonic and Tails team up in a sequel. Speaking to SYFY Wire, the director said that he simply can't get over how audiences reacted to Tails appearing in the movie's post-credits scene.
"Of all the screenings that I would pop in for, seeing people's reaction to Tails showing up at the end, nothing could have prepared me," Fowler explained. "To see people respond and having these kids just shout at the screen, and just yell their little brains out. I just never got sick of it."
"I just loved it," he continued. "And the idea that we made this whole movie, and we didn't have a single scene of Sonic and Tails together. It's incredible, but it also is so exciting [for a sequel]."
However, Fowler did go on to confirm that Paramount Pictures hasn't yet greenlit a sequel. That's likely due to the Coronavirus pandemic that's currently plaguing most of the world. Here's hoping that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is officially announced after that whole thing blows over. "Fingers crossed," Fowler is hopeful the sequel will be greenlit in the near future.
“If we're fortunate enough to do another movie, that we can finally get [Sonic and Tails] together and have some real fun, and really get to some of what is the next level of what people love about this world and these characters. Right now, it's just great that people are enjoying the movie and are now having an opportunity to watch it at home despite all this Corona craziness. That's enough for me. It's great that it's out there, and that people are enjoying it.”
Sonic the Hedgehog is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
Sonic the Hedgehog is now available digitally — Blu-ray and Ultra 4K HD release set for May 19th, 2020.
