After backlash against the first trailer for the
Sonic the Hedgehog movie, the director took to social media to reveal that they would be delaying the film in order to work on the titular character's design.
Sonic the Hedgehog stars Ben Schwartz, Jim Carrey, and James Marsden — the first of those will be voicing Sonic himself.
Thankfully, Paramount Pictures recently released a brand new trailer for
Sonic the Hedgehog and this time around it went down much more positively with fans. However, some were concerned that the animators may have been overworked in redesigning and reanimating the character from the ground up.
However, one of the animators recently spoke out about the conditions behind the scenes during the redesign process and it doesn't sound like the crew were treated harshly in the slightest — thankfully. Max Schneider spoke with
Sonic Team Argentina and revealed that they weren't put under more pressure than they would have usually been.
The team were apparently provided ample time to get the job done. The animator also revealed that Paramount Pictures were responsible for the first design, believing that fans would be opposed to it but the general public would be indifferent. The backlash didn't quite blindside them, in that case.
Schneider also revealed that the process took five months in total but didn't cost too much. This lines up with prior reports that the redesign only cost about $5 million (or maybe even less). Schneider explained more about the process below:
“To modify everything took many months, since a big part of the movie was already finished. And the process was basically to redesign the model, make a new rig and going back to animate everything with the character. Some things were rescued from the old animations, but others had to practically be animated again."
Based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG tells the story of the world’s speediest hedgehog as he embraces his new home on Earth. In this live-action adventure comedy, Sonic and his new best friend Tom (James Marsden) team up to defend the planet from the evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and his plans for world domination. The family-friendly film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.
Sonic the Hedgehog speeds into theatres on February 14th, 2020.
