Last month, Disney released a trio of Pixar shorts into theaters as part of the studio's SparkShorts initiative. One of those shorts,
Purl, has been released online and is now available to watch below.
Purl is an intriguing new short about "belonging," according to producer Gillian Libbert. The SparkShorts initiative gives the creative voices at Pixar Animation Studios a chance to share their stories which is exactly what writer and director Kirsten Lester has done as
Purl is about an "earnest ball of yarn who gets a job in a fast-paced, high energy, bro-tastic start-up."
"It's based on my experience being in animation," explains Lester.
"My first job I was, like, the only woman in the room and so in order to do the thing that I loved, I sort of became one of the guys."
An earnest ball of yarn named Purl gets a job at a fast-paced, high energy, male centric start-up. Things start to unravel as she tries to fit in with this close knit group. Purl must ask herself how far is she willing to go to get the acceptance she yearns for and in the end is it worth it?
Now that you've watched the short, feel free to check out these two behind the scenes videos. The first introduces the Pixar filmmakers behind the short while the second details what went into the making of
Purl.
Purl debuted in theaters last month alongside fellow SparkShorts
Smash and Grab and
Kitbull , both of which will also release on YouTube. Additionally, there are three other already-announced SparkShorts that will release on Disney+ -
Float,
Loop, and
Wind. We can assume if these are a hit, more of these fascinating stories will release on Disney's streaming service in the future.
