Disney has released the first full trailer for
Mary Poppins Returns and it's filled with all of the wonders and magic one would expect. The sequel sees Emily Blunt take on the role of the iconic English nanny, played by Julie Andrews in the 1964 original film based on P.L. Travers' book series.
In our first full look at Blunt's portrayal of the magical nanny, she is simply marvelous. Like the original film,
Mary Poppins Returns will feature musical sequences and scenes that mix live-action and animation.
Mary Poppins Returns is set in Depression-era London and re-introduces us to the Banks family's children, Jane and Michael (Emily Mortimer and Ben Whishaw), who are now grown up and with kids of their own. But when personal tragedy strikes, the seemingly ageless Mary Poppins returns to Cherry Tree Lane to help Banks family "find the joy and wonder missing in their lives following a personal loss."
Although original star Julie Andrews declined to appear in the new movie, her co-star Dick Van Dyke, now 92 years old, does have a small role; we get a glimpse of him in the trailer as well. Also starring in the film is Lin-Manuel Miranda as Jack the lamplighter, Meryl Streep as Mary's cousin Topsy, Colin Firth as Michael’s boss, and Angela Lansbury as the Balloon Woman. The sequel is directed by Rob Marshall (
Chicago) and written by David Magee (
Finding Neverland).
