Disney's live-action sequel to 2014's
Maleficent is set to arrive in theatres on October 18th. According to a new report by
Variety,
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is set for a $50 million opening weekend at the domestic box office. Its predecessor earned $69 million during its opening weekend — but that doesn't make $50 million any less impressive.
The first
Maleficent film was quite the smash hit at the box office, having earned $750 million overall. It seems that its upcoming sequel stands a chance at replicating that success —
despite prior reports which predicted failure for the Disney film. Angelina Jolie's star-power will likely carry the film some distance in terms of box office revenue.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil will be up against
Joker,
Gemini Man, and
Zombieland: Double Tap. The
Maleficent sequel distinguishes itself from the competition by being the only film to release around when it does which isn't aimed towards a mature and mostly male demographic.
Joker will likely prove to be a massive hit but it releases two weeks ahead of
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil — so it shouldn't be anything to worry about.
The years have been kind to Maleficent and Aurora. Their relationship, born of heartbreak, revenge and ultimately love, has flourished. Yet the hatred between man and the fairies still exists. Aurora’s impending marriage to Prince Phillip is cause for celebration in the kingdom of Ulstead and the neighboring Moors, as the wedding serves to unite the two worlds. When an unexpected encounter introduces a powerful new alliance, Maleficent and Aurora are pulled apart to opposing sides in a Great War, testing their loyalties and causing them to question whether they can truly be family.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is set to arrive in theatres on October 18th, 2019.
