Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle introduced Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Jack Black, and Kevin Hart to the franchise as well as totally revamped it. Though it takes place within the same universe as the 1995
Jumanji film, now the series revolves around a magical game console which traps you inside itself unless you're able to complete some perilous tasks.
Total Film Magazine (via
Gamefragger) recently did a piece on
Jumanji: The Next Level, the upcoming sequel to
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, and asked its stars what they would like to see in future instalments.
First of all, Jack Black proposed that they take
Jumanji into space and the realm of science-fiction — given the new
Jumanji instalments have both released around the same time as that of
Star Wars.
“I always thought we should be called Jumanji Strikes Back if we’re going up against another Star Wars [Note: the Next Level is released just a week before Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker]. I would like to go into space.
Karen Gillan suggested a dynamic that she would like to see brought to life in a
Jumanji sequel which would see her play an essentially sexist man who's trapped in her body.
“I think it would be really fun to play a really chauvinistic man. They get trapped in my body, and understand what it’s like to feel like a girl, and what it feels like to be objectified, and then suddenly have a whole epiphany about [their] behaviour.
Following Gillan's suggestion, Dwayne Johnson continued that thought:
“I’ve been thinking about that… My mind may change. But I think a female has to embody Dr. Smolder Bravestone. The oestrogen will be wonderfully mixed with the testosterone. And we’ll see what happens.”
In Jumanji: The Next Level, the gang is back but the game has changed. As they return to Jumanji to rescue one of their own, they discover that nothing is as they expect. The players will have to brave parts unknown and unexplored, from the arid deserts to the snowy mountains, in order to escape the world’s most dangerous game.
Jumanji: The Next Level is set to release in theatres on December 13th, 2019.
