Jim Carrey is currently finalizing talks with Paramount to portray the main antagonist from the Sonic the Hedgehog video game franchise in the new live-action film. According to Deadline, Jim Carrey, the comedian and actor who previously appeared in films such as How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, will once again be donning prosthetic make-up to play the villain Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik in Paramount’s upcoming live-action/CG adaptation of Sonic the Hedgehog.
While not a lot of details have been released for the film, the plot revolves around Sega’s Sonic as he attempts to halt Dr. Eggman’s plans to take over the world. The Sonic the Hedgehog film will be directed by Jeff Fowler, who previously worked on Blur Studio’s iconic short film Gopher Broke. It was recently announced that, among Jim Carrey, actors James Marsden (Westworld, X-Men) and Tika Sumpter (Ride Along) will also be joining the cast.
Sonic the Hedgehog has been wreaking high-speed fun since 1991 when the first Sonic video game was released on the Sega Genesis, and the blue, hedgehog has been Sega’s mascot character ever since. The most recent releases in the Sonic the Hedgehog series are Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces, which were both released in 2017. While this will be Sonic’s first time on the big screen, he’s made previous appearances on five separate animated shows, such as the Cartoon Network television series Sonic Boom (2014). The Sonic franchise has sold over 80 million physical copies, and led Sega to be one of the top video game companies in the early 1990s.
The Sonic the Hedgehog film is expected to hit theaters November 15, 2019.
