Gargoyles is one of the most seminal cartoons ever made and remains a cult favorite to this day. Created by
Spectacular Spider-Man's Greg Wiseman, the show was about a group of creatures who turned to stone by day and became New York City's protectors by night. The series had a darker tone than most cartoons at the time and was exceptionally well-written.
According to The Ankler's Richard Rushfield,
Get Out Director Jordan Peele has already pitched his vision of a rebooted
Gargoyles to Disney. Unfortunately, the studio has yet to express any enthusiasm for the film.
“How do you turn down Jordan Peele? Well, you can’t. Who wants to be responsible for that decision? So in the absence of a good reason to say no, but prevented by their Big IP box from saying yes, Disney is slow walking the decision. It’s hoping, it seems, that they’ll run out the clock, he’ll sign other deals elsewhere, and the project will just fade away.”
A possible reason why Disney is hesitant is because the studio makes wholesome, four-quadrant entertainment like the Pixar and Marvel films. It's speculated that Peele, because of his horror background, may have presented a take that was a bit too dark for Disney's liking.
Whether directed by Peele or not, a live action
Gargoyles movie would be a perfect summer blockbuster. If it ever happens, I hope Keith David voices Goliath again.
The series features a clan of warrior creatures known as gargoyles that turn to stone during the day. Led by their leader Goliath in the year 994 A.D., they protect Castle Wyvern and its resident humans on the coast of Scotland until betrayal causes a massacre of the clan and a magic spell forces the six survivors into stone sleep, until the castle rises over the clouds. In 1994, a billionaire named David Xanatos purchases the castle and moves it to the top of his Manhattan skyscraper, breaking the spell. Awakening in modern day Manhattan, the gargoyles must adapt to this new world as they vow to protect the citizens of New York.
