Next Gen, brought to life by Tangent Animation (Ozzy) in Canada, was originally targeted for just Chinese theaters where it will be headed to next month, but in a bidding war that ultimately saw Netflix the victor for distribution rights to the English speaking markets will reportedly have paid $30 million to do so.
Next Gen is based loosely off a popular original webcomic, 7723, by Wang Nima, the creator of a popular "rage comic" website in China (Baozou Manhua) as well.
The film centers around a loner girl in a futuristic world who befriends a top-secret robot who is now the only thing that can save the world from destruction.
Here's the first look at the official trailer:
The English cast is comprised of John Krasinski (The Office, A Quiet Place), Charlyne Yi (Knocked Up), Jason Sudeikis (SNL, Horrible Bosses), David Cross (Arrested Development), and Constance Wu (Fresh Off the Boat, Crazy Rich Asians).
The film premieres on Netflix September 7th and debuts in Chinese theaters next month.
