Last month, director Guy Ritchie welcomed Disney fans to a whole new world with his live-action adaptation of
Aladdin. As of this weekend (and this writing), the remake of the animated classic is now sitting at worldwide total of $810.1 million.
It's just the third film of 2019 to hit the milestone; the other two films are — get this — also Disney movies.
Avengers: Endgame leads the list with a global haul of $2.75 billion (likely to grow with its theatrical re-release).
Captain Marvel, another Marvel pic, is second on the list with $1.13 billion worldwide.
It's doubtful that
Aladdin will hit the $1 billion mark, especially with
Toy Story 4 having hit theaters this weekend and
Spider-Man: Far From Home on deck with a July 2 release. Jon Favreau's
The Lion King, another adaptation of a Disney animated classic, is set to hit theaters July 19. Basically, Disney is set to rule the box office this summer.
Interestingly, most of Aladdin's success came overseas where it brought in $522.6 million (versus $287.5 million domestically). But money is money and Disney has to be happy with the global haul of
Aladdin.
A thrilling and vibrant live-action adaptation of Disney’s animated classic, “Aladdin” is the exciting tale of the charming street rat Aladdin, the courageous and self-determined Princess Jasmine and the Genie who may be the key to their future. Directed by Guy Ritchie, who brings his singular flair for fast-paced, visceral action to the fictitious port city of Agrabah, “Aladdin” is written by John August and Ritchie based on Disney’s “Aladdin.” The film stars Will Smith as the Genie; Mena Massoud as Aladdin; Naomi Scott as Jasmine; Marwan Kenzari as Jafar; Navid Negahban as the Sultan; Nasim Pedrad as Dalia and Billy Magnussen as Prince Anders.
Aladdin is still playing in theaters.
