25 years ago Superman #75: The Death of Superman, which was comprised solely of splash pages and brought an end to the "Doomsday" storyline, was released and saw Superman meet his end at the hands of the hulking monster known as Doomsday. The event was iconic and has remained one of the most famous comic-book issues to ever hit the shelves.
The momentous event held so much weight that it has since been adapted into a live-action film, that being 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, as well as been converted into animation for the soon to be released The Death of Superman animated feature.
The animated film's director, Sam Liu, recently discussed his upcoming work with Comicbook.com during the recently passed San Diego Comic-Con event. Liu explained how the film's fateful battle sequence differs from the source material on account of its different medium.
I think comics are smart when they do that because they start playing with something that is not really inherent in the medium, which is pacing and timing. Inherently, that is something that was very smart of them but it's a little bit more noticeable, obviously, in film. It's a moving media. So it's faster cuts or longer shots or closer shots, more dynamic shots. All of those things I think have the same feeling, whether it's timing or whether it's composition. I think it's something that they used to a great effect in the comics, but I think it's easier in film.
It sounds as if Liu knows what he's talking about, which is a great sign for the highly anticipated animated feature. What do you think about Liu's comments? Are you looking forward to his adaptation of The Death of Superman?
The Death of Superman officially releases on August 7th.
