This iteration of the live-action
Barbie movie was announced back in January by Warner Bros. and LuckyChap Entertainment. The latter company was founded by Margot Robbie who will also star as the titular doll. Just two weeks ago,
it was announced that Greta Gerwig Noah Baumbach — the former being the Academy Award-nominated writer-director behind 2017's
Lady Bird.
Before this version of the
Barbie movie, there was one in the works which involved Amy Schumer and another which would've starred Anne Hathaway. The former of those would've presumably been a comedy, while details about the latter are unknown — beyond that Alethea Jones would've directed.
Robbie's
Barbie movie will seemingly be more sincere. The actress recently participated in an interview with
Variety in which she spoke about what she wants to achieve with the film — that being putting out positivity and inspiring children.
"I think it's a great opportunity to put some positivity out into the world and a chance to be aspirational for younger kids," Robbie stated in the interview which you can watch below:
