The previously reported KPop Demon Hunters Sing-Along Event has now been confirmed by Netflix. The streaming giant announced the special theatrical event, which will occur for just one weekend on August 23rd and August 24th.
"In celebration of the global hit, which is currently the most-watched Netflix animated original film of all time, KPop Demon Hunters A Sing-Along Event invites HUNTR/X and Saja Boys devotees alike to gather and belt their hearts out to a sing-along version of the wildly popular animated film," Netflix announced.
Special showings will take place in theaters across the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK, with tickets currently available. Well, sort of. Despite Netflix announcing the event today, tickets have been a while for the past couple of days and have already been selling out. Produced by Sony Pictures Animation (Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, The Mitchells vs. The Machines), KPop Demon Hunters is a CG-animated musical action-fantasy film. The story revolves around Huntr/x, a world-famous K-pop girl group that moonlights as demon hunters. Using their powerful voices, they protect their fans from supernatural demon threats through the mystical "Honmoon" barrier.
Since debuting on Netflix in June, KPop Demon Hunters has quickly become one of this year's most successful films. With more than 180 million views, it currently ranks second among Netflix's most popular English-language films, and has become Netflix's most-watched animated film of all time.
Part of the film's success can be attributed to its incredible soundtrack, KPop Demon Hunters (Soundtrack from the Netflix Film), which debuted at #8 on the Billboard 200, and claimed the #1 spot on US Top Soundtracks. It currently has more than three billion global streams to date. The movie's signature track "Golden," performed by Huntr/x, hit #1 on the Billboard Global 200 and became the highest-charting soundtrack single in years in the U.S., peaking at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100.
This special theatrical sing-along feels less like a money grab and more like Netflix wanting to celebrate the movie's incredible soundtrack, while continuing to keep audiences engaged with what will soon be Netflix's next big animated franchise. There are reports that Netflix is looking to build upon the movie's success with sequels and possibly even a live-action adaptation.
