Technology can be complicated. But so can friendship. 20th Century Studios' upcoming CG animated film Ron's Gone Wrong combines them both in what looks like a hiliarious and heartwarming story about the "wonderful messiness of true friendship."
The trailer begins with a commercial for the latest piece of technology, the B*Bot, a digitally-connected device with seemingly unlimited ability. The B*Bot is designed to be your "Best Friend out of the Box," but when Barney opens his bilated birthday gift, he's greeted with a faulty version named Ron.
What unfolds is an action-packed journey about friendship set against the backdrop of the social media age.
20th Century Studios and Locksmith Animation’s “Ron’s Gone Wrong” is the story of Barney, a socially awkward middle-schooler and Ron, his new walking, talking, digitally-connected device, which is supposed to be his “Best Friend out of the Box.” Ron’s hilarious malfunctions, set against the backdrop of the social media age, launch them into an action-packed journey in which boy and robot come to terms with the wonderful messiness of true friendship.
With how interconnected technology is with all our lives, it's not surprising to see another animated film explore the topic. But while most of these films ultimately boil down to some sort of apocalyptic tech uprising, it's nice to see Ron's Gone Wrong go a different direction with it.
Ron's Gone Wrong features the voices of Zach Galifianakis (A Wrinkle in Time) as Ron and Jack Dylan Grazer (Shazam!) as Barney. The cast is rounded out with Olivia Colman (The Crown), Ed Helms (The Office), Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), Rob Delaney (Deadpool 2), Kylie Cantrall (Gabby Duran and the Unsittables), Ricardo Hurtado (The Goldbergs), Marcus Scribner (Black-ish) and Thomas Barbusca (Chad).
The film is directed by Pixar veteran Jean-Philippe Vine, who served as a story artist on Cars 3 and The Good Dinosaur and Locksmith Animation co-founder Sarah Smith (Arthur Christmas). Octavio Rodriguez, the story artist on Coco and The Incredibles 2, is co-directing. The script is penned by Peter Baynham (Arthur Christmas) and Sarah Smith.
Ron's Gone Wrong will open in theaters worldwide October 22, 2021.
