Mulan is set to arrive in theatres on March 27th. The upcoming film is yet another of Disney's live-action remakes, this time being based on the 1998 animated classic of the same name. Liu Yifei stars as the titular character while Donnie Yen plays Commander Tung, Jason Scott Lee plays Böri Khan, Yoson An plays Cheng Honghui, Gong Li plays Xianniang and Jet Li plays The Emperor.
In keeping with the plot of the original, animated version;
Mulan follows a fearless woman who disguises herself as a man in order to take her ailing father's place as a part of the Imperial Army. The final trailer for
Mulan is expected to be released later tonight during the Super Bowl —
more on that here.
According to a new report by
Box Office Pro, it currently seems that Mulan will earn between $40 million and $60 million at the domestic box office during its opening weekend. They're a pretty reputable source, though, this is regarded as long-range tracking — meaning that more accurate estimations will surface closer to release.
While there's a very good chance that
Mulan will join its live-action Disney brethren (such as
Aladdin,
The Lion King, and
Beauty and the Beast) in earning over $1 billion at the box office; Box Office Pro does mention some points against the film's performance.
Mulan will greatly differ from the source material and it's said that this could stifle excitement for some.
Additionally, both
Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway and
Trolls: World Tour will be releasing soon afterwards and could potentially steal some family audiences. That's without mentioning the supposedly significant reshoots that went down a couple of months back.
When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation…and a proud father.
Mulan will arrive in theatres on March 27th, 2020.
