News has emerged that Disney is currently developing a sequel to it $1.65 billion grossing live-action Lion King remake. However, it seems Jon Favreau is too busy with The Mandalorian to return as director as Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk helmer Barry Jenkins is set to replace him.
Jeff Nathanson, who wrote the script for the first film has already completed a screenplay for the sequel. While Favreau is departing, the voice cast for the film- which includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Donald Glover, Alfre Woodard, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, James Earl Jones, John Oliver, Keegan-Michael Key, Eric Andre, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, Amy Sedaris and Chance the Rapper are all expected to return.
In a statement to Deadline, Jenkins confirmed the news, adding, "Helping my sister raise two young boys during the ’90s, I grew up with these characters. Having the opportunity to work with Disney on expanding this magnificent tale of friendship, love and legacy while furthering my work chronicling the lives and souls of folk within the African diaspora is a dream come true."
Details on the sequel are light but its said to be both a continuation of the previous film that also explores the origin of the villainous Scar. Such a confusing logline has led to some outlets describing the project as a sequel while others are referring to it as a prequel.
There's no release date for the film yet but the project is reportedly a high priority at the studio.
