It has now been reported by numerous outlets that longtime Disney CEO Bob Iger is immediately stepping down from his position at the House of Mouse. While it is his decision and he will remain on as Executive Chairman until the end of 2020 when his contract is up. Meanwhile, Bob Chapek, who has been with Disney for nearly three decades is stepping into the shoes of the stressful yet lucrative position.
Iger oversaw a profitable time in Disney's long and ambitious history. Having been CEO since 2005, the company has gone through drastic expansion under his reign and it is interesting to see how that may change with a new head in charge. Overseeing the fruitful acquisition of Marvel, Fox, Lucasfilm, and Pixar, he helped to ensure the continued success of Disney through the past two decades. He made the following comment regarding the new change of corporate heads.
With the successful launch of Disney’s direct-to-consumer businesses and the integration of Twenty-First Century Fox well underway, I believe this is the optimal time to transition to a new CEO.
I have the utmost confidence in Bob and look forward to working closely with him over the next 22 months as he assumes this new role and delves deeper into Disney’s multifaceted global businesses and operations, while I continue to focus on the Company’s creative endeavors.
Meanwhile, Chapek has also released a respectful statement regarding his predecessor and the current business exchange. Iger revealed that he was chosen as his successor "some time ago". Check out what Chapek had to say about him below.
I am incredibly honored and humbled to assume the role of CEO of what I truly believe is the greatest company in the world, and to lead our exceptionally talented and dedicated cast members and employees.
Bob Iger has built Disney into the most admired and successful media and entertainment company, and I have been lucky to enjoy a front-row seat as a member of his leadership team.
